Teacher Bios

Dr. Fred W. Ball, Jr. has been teaching one way or the other since 2002. He is an ordained minister, a husband of a lovely wife, Deloris, and the father of an 11 yr. old son, Nile. He has degrees from Georgia State University, a graduate degree from Luther Rice University, and a doctorate from the American University of Biblical Studies. His doctoral dissertation was entitled, "Race and Grace: an Analysis of the Imago Dei in the Movement for Racial Equality". For four years, he was president of an apologetics ministry and served as the host of the apologetically oriented "Oracles of God" radio broadcast. He is a member of the Evangelical Philosophical Society, the Jonathan Edwards Institute, and the Napoleonic Society of America. He is a baseball coach, an avid reader, and conference speaker.

Brent Becker has a master's degree from Luther Rice University and is a licensed CPA and real estate agent in the state of Georgia. He has 25 years of experience in various aspects of accounting. Brent has prepared personal and corporate tax returns for 20 years in addition to working as a certified financial counselor with Crown Financial Concepts. He has also volunteered with the Junior Achievement of Georgia program and has lead continuing educational session within the BellSouth Corporation. Brent has a strong desire to research the subject that is taught to give further clarification and insight.

Caryn Becker earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Retailing from Michigan State University (1981) and an Honors Associate of Arts degree from the Art Institute of Atlanta in Residential Planning and Retailing (1989). She worked in the buying offices of The Dayton Hudson Department Store Company and Riches (1981-1989) starting as a trainee buyer to become a traveling planner-buyer. Caryn has always worked with children since the age of 10 in various capacities. She was on staff at First Baptist Atlanta Church as a preschool teacher (1989-1995) and has taught (Sunday) middle school girls since 2006. Caryn has studied health and nutrition since 1992, and incorporated the resulting lifestyle changes to meet the needs of her family. Currently in school at Georgia Perimeter College, Caryn is pursuing her life long dream to become a NICU baby nurse. Caryn and her husband Brent are the parents of home educated six children. They live in Stone Mountain, and are members of First Baptist Atlanta Church in Dunwoody. Caryn's desire is to help students become all that God has predestined them to be, and to be one of many positive influences to help guide the next generation.

Sue Burton graduated with a BS in psychology and education from Syracuse University and has been teaching in public and Christian schools for 27 years. She and her husband, Wayne, have four grown children and have lived in Lilburn for 24 years. Sue is NJ certified K through 8th and taught third, fourth, fifth, and eighth grades in public school in New York and New Jersey. Sue currently holds a GA 4th-8th certification in language arts, science and social studies and taught sixth grade math, science, Bible, and language arts at Providence Christian Academy for 13 years. She will retire from Snellville Middle in May, 2009, after teaching physical and earth science for the past six years and is looking forward to joining the LAC home school group this coming year.

Lisa Calhoun has a BA from the University of Michigan (1984) and a Master in Business Administration from Clark Atlanta University (1990). Lisa was in corporate America for over 20 years where she spent 16 years with The Coca-Cola Company as a project manager and trainer. She travelled around the world training individuals on internal financial systems and best practices. Lisa has always worked with youth as a mentor, Sunday school teacher and career day speaker. She currently teaches life skills to youth in foster care and she is also licensed foster parent. She is a member of Victory World Church in Norcross. She volunteers as the team leader for Gwinnett County Regional Youth Detention Center where her team teaches bible study and visits the youth incarcerated there. Lisa is also an instructor for the Victory World Ministry Training Center. She is very active with the missions department and has been on mission trips with her church as well as other mission trips in the past. She uses humor, music and very interactive facilitation to make learning a pleasant and enjoyable experience for her students.

Sean Casey has been a professional writer for more than 20 years and a freelance writer for the last 12 years. His broad writing experience spans newspapers, national trade association publications, television promotions, public relations and Internet publishing. Other current and recent editorial clients include the San Diego Zoo, The Nature Conservatory, Smoke Rise Academy of Arts and The List Inc. Sean also is active in community theatre as an actor, drama camp teacher and in theatre marketing and public relations. He graduated from The American University in Washington DC with bachelor's degree in communications. Sean is married to Christine, a physician and U.S. Public Health Service commissioned officer working at the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. Sean and Chris have two children, Sam and Dorey, who attend Greater Atlanta Christian School. The family attends Lilburn Alliance Church and is active in local soccer and in local community theatre.

Curt Coman graduated from Berry College in 1984 with a double major in biology and chemistry and has worked as a chemist at the Centers for Disease Control for the past 25 years. He has continued his education since then by taking a number of graduate-level courses in the areas of biochemistry and molecular biology. He started teaching biology to home school students six years ago and joined the LAC program in 2007. He and his family attend Intown Community Church, a PCA church in Atlanta. His wife Kitty is a homemaker and massage therapist. His daughter Claire is a freshman at St. Pius Academy, and his son Sam is a sophomore at Georgia Tech. Curt is a member of the National Association of Biology Teachers.

Betsy Cubas is a lifelong lover of the Spanish language. She is a graduate of Seminario Bíblico Bautista of Miami, Florida. She and her husband, a native Peruvian, have served in the ministry for over thirty years, first in Miami and now in metro Atlanta. Her teaching experience includes teaching in Christian schools and private classes in the metro Atlanta area, homeschooling her three children and tutoring. She regularly teaches a ladies' Sunday School class at their church and enjoys speaking to ladies' groups. Her goals are to convey her love for the Spanish language and culture while striving toward fluency and perfection in pronunciation. In addition to teaching the Spanish classes at LAC, she teaches an elective class called "God's Principles in Design" to use to parallel eight basic principles of design to God's principles for our lives. She recently graduated from Gwinnett Technical College with an associate's in Interior Design.

Kathy Endara graduated from Mercyhurst College with a B.S. in education and English and has been teaching in various capacities for the past 25 years. She studied Spanish in college and in grades 7 - 12. Her first, real teaching experience was in Ecuador, South America. during her college years, teaching English as a second Language. It was there that she developed her love for the Spanish language and for teaching, and where she met her husband Jose. She and Jose, a software test engineer for Northrup, have been married for 30 years and have 4 children. Over the years they have worked together in Spanish church ministries, and Kathy has served in children's and youth ministries in teaching and discipleship. Currently she is involved with the Family Heritage Foundation's work in Clarkston, tutoring refugee children. Kathy homeschooled for 12 years, taught ESL for the Los Angeles school district and for Gwinnett Technical College and spent 6 years teaching Spanish classes at LAC and in her home. Currently she teaches 2nd grade in a part time capacity at Parkview Christian School and is looking forward to teaching Spanish again. She and her family attend Grace Fellowship Church.

Paula Gulick is a retired teacher with over thirty years of teaching experience. She has taught students from first grade to seventh grade. She has two master degrees- reading and elementary education from West Georgia College. She has earned an Educational Specialist Degree in early childhood education. She recently has been certified as a Georgia Reading Specialist and a National Board Certified teacher. She is a member of Lakewood Baptist Church in Gainesville, Georgia. She has been to Guatemala on a mission trip and is seeking to form an intercessory prayer ministry there. She participates in various small bible study groups. She believes with a passion that each child is unique, special, and a designed gift from God. Every child can be successful. She is the creator of Kid's Nest services.

Katrina Harris graduated from Georgia State University in 1996 with her MA in Anthropology. While in college, she worked as a nanny and personal assistant. She and her husband are the parents of two girls aged 9 and 12, and she has been homeschooling her oldest daugther for seven years. Katrina studied Latin for five years in high school (including AP Latin and the Governor's Honors Latin program) and is an aficionado of the classical method. This will be Katrina's sixth year of teaching Latin to high school homeschoolers. The Harris family attends Trinity Lutheran Church in Lilburn.

Snow Kendall has a Bachelor of Science in Forest Resources (1990) from The University of Georgia. After working in forestry and Geographic Information Systems for 8 years in central Georgia, she moved to Lawrenceville with her husband, Greg, to stay home with her children. She has taught 6th grade Sunday school for 10 years, and preschool for over 4 years. She has a heart for special needs children, and kids with learning differences. Snow has been married to her husband, Greg for twenty years. She homeschools her daughter, Melody (14) and son, McKinzy (12). Her family is active in martial arts ministry and attends Campus Church of Christ.

Stephanie Laubscher graduated from Oglethorpe University in Atlanta (2009) with an Individually Planned Major in Traditional Form and Modern Aesthetics, primarily comprising the disciplines of English, art history, and theatre (with an emphasis on Shakespearean literature and performance). While a student at Oglethorpe, Stephanie worked in their Writing Center, personally conducting over two-hundred individual writing conferences with her peers; it was also at Oglethorpe that she discovered her interest in teaching, due both to her role as an instructor of writing and the dedicated example of her professors. Stephanie currently directs an Elementary school residency for Georgia Shakespeare, teaches as a guest artist with Georgia Ensemble Theatre, and is a freelance writing tutor. She is a member of Trinity Anglican Mission in Atlanta.

Leslie Lewin has been passionate about photography since childhood. She has been a professional photographer for the last 20 years. Her business, Lewin Photography has covered weddings, commercial photography, special events, family and children's portraiture and fine arts. She is a member of Southeastern Photographic Society and has been published. Her most prized accomplishment is her happy marriage to Blake for the last 25 years and their three beautiful children, Lyric, Nate and Ben. She loves teaching as much as photography and homeschooled her three children for ten years.

Derek Owens taught physics, honors physics, AP Physics, and AP computer science at The Westminster Schools in Atlanta, GA from 1988-2000. He currently teaches Physics in the summer school program at Westminster. He graduated from Duke University in 1988 with a degree in mechanical engineering and physics, and worked at the TIP program at Duke for two years, teaching physics and heading the Satellite Science Program. He received a National Science Foundation scholarship and studied history and philosophy of science at L'Abri Fellowship in England. He worked as a software developer for five years before returning to teaching. This will be his fifth school year teaching homeschoolers in the Atlanta area. Angela Paul's SAT score earned her National Achievement and National Merit scholarships and landed her an excellent internship with Corning Glass Works. Angela attended both MIT and GA Tech and holds bachelor's and master's degrees in chemical engineering. She and her husband Jim are veteran homeschoolers having homeschooled their four children from birth to college. Angela has taught math and science classes for homeschoolers for over 10 years and is the director of Northeast Independent Preparatory Academy, an accredited association of homeschooling parents. She and her family have been members of Mount Paran Church of God for the last 17 years.

Susan Payton graduated from Asbury College. Susan and her husband Doug currently home schools their four children, ages 5-14. She has taught Sunday School to several different age groups and coordinated and taught many other children’s programs at her home church, Lilburn Alliance Church. Susan has a passion for missions and books. Susan is active with coordinating the home school classes at LAC and is available to answer any questions regarding these classes.

Judy Renshaw is a retired teacher with over 30 years experience - 13 years at public schools in PA and GA, 2 years at Heritage Christian School in IN, and 18 years teaching MK's in Papua, Indonesia and Quito, Ecuador. She has taught students a variety of subjects from grades 1-8. This past year, Judy has been tutoring students in math. She graduated from Goshen College in IN with a BS in elementary Education and received an MEd in Elementary counseling from West Chester University in PA. Judy is currently IN, PA, and GA certified. Her husband Ron teaches science for LAC Home School group. They live in Snellville and are members of LAC. Info. About her children can be found on her husband's bio.

Ron Renshaw graduated from Millersville University in 1968 with a BS in Education and taught in public schools while earning an MEd at West Chester University. He and Judy taught MK's for 13 years in West Papua, Indonesia and then 4 years in Quito, Ecuador. Taking advantage of furloughs, he continued to study science at Bethel and Goshen Colleges and at IUSB. His career has been spent teaching Life, Earth, and Physical Sciences, and Chemistry, as well as tutoring elementary children one-on-one in the Rockdale Public Schools. His wife Judy, who also teaches at LAC Homeschool, graduated with a BS from Goshen College and an MEd from West Chester University. His oldest child Penny holds a BS in Missions with a minor in TESOL from Toccoa Falls College. Mark graduated with a bachelor's degree from Ball State and an MS in Marine Biology from Grice Marine Lab at Charleston College. His youngest, Matt, is a Federal Probation Officer who earned a BA graduate of Bethel College and an MBA from Indiana Westleyan. Judy and Ron live in Snellville and are members of Lilburn Alliance Church.

Kathryn Romanoff taught chemistry in the Metro Atlanta Area for eighteen years until she retired to become a stay at home mom. During her tenure as a public school teacher she taught various math, science and chemistry courses including Advanced Placement Chemistry. She also taught chemistry to homeschoolers for twelve of the last thirteen years. Mrs. Romanoff has a B.S. in Education from the University of Tennessee and a Masters of Education form Georgia State University. Currently she is homeschooling her fifteen-year- old daughter and thirteen-year-old son who would attest to her continual desire to relate chemistry to everyday life. The Romanoff family attends Redeemer Orthodox Presbyterian Church.

Marlys Roos has a B.A. in Speech and Drama, and an M.A. in Education. She has studied and performed at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, the University of Georgia Studies Abroad in Cortona, Italy, the Southeastern Savoyards and other local theatre companies. She has written, directed and performed in mystery dinner theatre for such companies as Coca-Cola and the New Georgia Railroad and has written numerous scripts for churches as well as teaching materials for Vacation Bible School and discipleship groups. Her technical writing skills were honed during her sales career (prior to the Lord's call to teach) as she wrote advertisements and reports, made presentations, created company newsletters, developed training programs, and, of course, wrote many business letters. As a certified teacher, she has taught in public schools and has homeschooled for five years. She, her husband and son are members of Perimeter Church.

Dr. Alan Shaw graduated from Harvard University with a B.A. in Applied Mathematics in 1985. He then received his M.S. from MIT in 1988 in Computer Science and his Ph.D. in Media Arts and Sciences at the MIT Media Laboratory in 1995. In 2005, Dr. Shaw was appointed to the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, where he taught courses in Computer Science and began research that involved using simulations and virtual reality for educational purposes. In 2006, Dr. Shaw was appointed to the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia, where he is teaching courses in Computer Science and where he is researching the potential educational benefits of virtual and collaborative technologies. Dr. Shaw has been working with teenagers for most of his adult life. He is an Ordained Minister and Elder at Kingdom City Church in Stone Mountain, Georgia. He is married to Michelle Shaw and the father of 5 children who have been homeschooled all of their lives.

Michelle Shaw received her B.A. in Economics from Harvard College in 1985 and her J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1989. She practiced law in Massachusetts for six years before she chose to focus on homeschooling her children. She brings to her debate class her training and experience in criminal and civil litigation. Michelle has taught teenagers in various capacities for over 15 years. She is married to Dr. Alan Shaw, an Assistant Professor in Computer Science at Kennesaw State University. Michelle, Alan and their five children (ages 7 - 15) live in Stone Mountain and are active members of Kingdom City Church.

Margaret Shuman has taught in public and private traditional classrooms for nine years and has worked in the homeschooling community for a dozen more. She has a degree and teaching certificate in secondary English education and an MA in speech and drama. Margaret has taught speech on the college level and is a certified AP English instructor. She has also been employed by the College Board testing service to score the SAT essay and teaches verbal prep workshops. Margaret enjoys teaching literature with an eye for the drama and history behind each work, and teaching speech and writing with a focus on life skills and college preparation. The Shumans home schooled their own recent high school graduate "all the way through" and attend Lilburn Alliance Church.

Anthony Smith has been a professional artist for over 25 years. After attending the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Tony started drawing caricatures for a large variety of private and corporate clients. In addition to caricature, he has completed many fine art portraits in a variety of mediums including charcoal, graphite, pastel and colored pencil. He was voted 2nd place for Best Black and White Technique at the 2002 National Cariaturist Network Convention held in Norcross, GA, and first place for Best Black and White Technique at the 2005 NCN convention in Las Vegas as well as at the 2006 NCN Convention in Orlando, Florida. Tony has three daughters, two whom he still homeschools, and one who graduated with an atheletic scholarship. He is an ordained minister and girls basketball coach with the Greater Gwinnett Christian Barons. He attends Grace Atlanta Bible Church in Duluth, GA, and is involved in the Good News Club, an evangelistic outreach ministry of Child Evangelism Fellowship.

Lon Waitman has a BFA in Acting from the University of North Dakota, and also studied at the University of Minnesota (BFA Acting Program), the American Conservatory Theatre (San Francisco) and Dell'Arte International School of Physical Comedy. He is a member of the professional stage actors' union, Actors' Equity, and has acted on numerous professional stages in the Atlanta area, including The Alliance Theatre, as well as various freelance work in film, TV, and commercials. He has been the artistic director of two theatre companies, and was director of the Stage Door Players' Theatre School in Dunwoody. Among other teaching experience, he was a lead teacher at the Georgia Ensemble Theatre Conservatory in Roswell, was the acting instructor for one year at Mount Vernon Christian Academy. He has also taught acting, mime and physical comedy to children and adults of every age, in a variety of public and private schools and churches, including various in-school residencies for the Georgia Council for the Arts. Presently, he is the director of Vertical Hold Productions, a video and animation production company that creates Christian content for teens and young adults. Lon is married and is an ordained minister.

Kathy Walker graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor of Science in 1984. She has been teaching Physical Education since 2005 and tennis since 1996. She has developed her own PE curriculum, organized girls and boys' middle school basketball programs, and tutored elementary students. She has continued her education in the areas of Child Psychology, Parenting, Biblical Child Development, and learning methods for dyslexic students. A wife and mother of 4, she is currently home schooling her 17 year old daughter.

Carol Washburn graduated from Perimeter College (Dekalb College) in 1982. She was an honor student in Graphic Design and Advertising. She worked as a graphic designer in the IBM publications department through 1989 where she developed software packaging designs. She attended Monart Training Seminar in California 2003. She is now perusing her love of painting and is displaying her works in many juried art festivals in the Georgia area. Her works are on display at the Carisma Gallery in downtown historic Buford.

Brad Winsted is currently Director of Children's Ministry International . He was a Naval pilot for 25 years. He went to the University of Colorado where he received his Bachelor of Arts (B.A. Political Science). He graduated with a Master's in Business Science (MBS-Human Resources Development) from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA and a Master of Arts in Goverment and International Strategy and Policy equivalent from the Navy War College, in Newport, RI. Brad has taught American Government, American History, World History and Economics for 4 years in local Home School coops. Brad is married to Fawn Winsted, they have eight homeschooled children and six grandchildren.

Julia Wofford received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Art in (1993).  Julia started her working career in Psychology. She worked as a counselor with drug addicts, alcoholics, homeless, pregnant girls and troubled teens.  In 2001 she started teaching art at St. Timothy School where she taught for six years. Ms. Julia taught nursery age to 6th grade. In 2006 she moved Killian Hill Christian school where she taught 2nd through 12th grade.  She enjoyed the challenge of creating her own curriculum to meet the standard of the schools and the desires of the children to create. Julia and her husband Randy have seven grown children with eleven grandchildren. Their fifteen year old daughter Kaitlyn is at home and joining the L.A.C. home-school this fall.  Julia and her family have recently joined Lilburn Alliance Church where as a recommitment to God and each other they were all baptized together.

Micah Wood is a fourth degree black belt in American Karate and has been instructing for twelve years. He has trained in Kenpo Karate, Modern Arnis, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He earned a Bachelors of Science in Marketing and Management from Georgia State University and runs his own web marketing and design company Order of Business, LLC. He is married to Megan, and has one daughter Adyson.

Megan Wood earned her Bachelors of Science in Education from Georgia State University. She has taught in the public school system for four years. Six years ago she co-founded Karate for Christ, which is a martial arts school with a Christ based curriculum. She earned her black belt in April of 2009 and has been instructing for three years. She is married to Micah and has one daughter Adyson.
